Traditional Catholic Grandma & Sewist
About the Recipe
This is Grandma's favorite pie crust recipe for sweet and savory pies. Enjoy!
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
2 sticks (16 Tablespoons) butter, cold
3 to 4 Tablespoons of ice cold water
2 to 4 Tablespoons of buttermilk or enough to make a workable dough
Preparation
Step 1
Place flour, salt and sugar into a food processer and mix dry ingredients together.
Step 2
Dice butter into small squares and add to dry ingredient mixture. Pulse butter into flour until pea-sized butter bits are well distributed into the flour mixture.
Step 3
Add water, then buttermilk one Tablespoon at a time until dough forms and appears workable. Do not over blend.
Step 4
Divide dough in half. Roll out pie shell on a floured pastry board surface. Dust the top of the pie dough surface and quarter-fold. Place in a 9-inch deep dish pie plate. Crimp the top edge.
Step 5
Place parchment paper over the crust and add enough dry beans to hold down the crust from forming air bubbles. Place in a 375 degree Fahrenheit oven for 20 minutes to pre-bake shell for a pumpkin pie or use recipe for any other pies as well, sweet or savory.
